Our third Fernham Burns Supper will be on Saturday 27 January 2018 at 7.30pm. It will be something to look forward to in January.

Our Burns Night will be a bawdy and irreverent celebration of Robbie Burns’s life and will held in the Banqueting Hall of the Woodman Inn with a traditional three course meal accompanied by a piper. We will keep it simple this year and NOT go down to the village hall for Scottish Country dancing but musical entertainment after the meal may be possible.

Our new team at the Woodman, Francois, Caroline and Luke, are being very supportive of our village and have kindly agreed an excellent price for the Burns Supper. For a three course meal and one 175 ml glasses of wine, it will be a very modest £26 per head. So with a maximum of 50 places only, please let me have your cheques or cash as soon as possible (by New Year’s Eve at the latest please). With limited places available, there will be a maximum of four guests per couple this time, but please speak to me if you want to invite more guests and I will run a reserve list. First come, first served, on places so please don’t hold off booking, we were quickly oversubscribed last time.

Our evening will start at 7.30 pm on Saturday 27 January. At 7.45 pm we will parade the haggis, led by the piper and carried by Posey Nancy. We will tuck into a three course meal with recitals of some of Burn’s poems throughout the evening (Table Chieftains will be asked to nominate their table Bard, as we did last time – great fun!).  As before, you will be welcome to wear anything remotely Scottish (car blankets will do!) and to ‘dress your table’ in the afternoon so that it looks suitably Caledonian (many will remember the ‘Flying Haggis’ of the 2012 Supper).

I would be really grateful for volunteers to help me run the event, please. Also volunteers to give the Immortal Memory address and the two Toasts (Ta’ the Lassies and a (suitably cutting!) reply Fra’ the Lassies). (Lots of help with speeches on the internet these days). Come on all you would-be actors out there!  All proceeds from tickets sales and the raffle will be in aid of Helen and Douglas House Children’s Hospice and the Police Dependents Fund.

Grateful for raffle prizes please! (Drop round to Hillcrest, two doors from Wioodman)

Please let me know if you are willing to be a Table Chieftain and give me the names of your Clan (tables of 8, the Clan can pay direct). Don’t worry if you don’t have a clan to join – we will sort that out for you, just sign up for the Supper. And of course it’s an ideal occasion to invite your friends and relatives too.

All in all, I promise it will be a great night and one that can be enjoyed by everyone in the village, even if you think your Scottish heritage may be a wee bit distant!

Best wishes,

Neil
